Parametric Equations Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between a Cartesian equation and a parametric equation?

A

Cartesian = 2 values (x and y)
Parametric = 3 values (x, y and t)

Q

How do you solve parametric
equations?

A

Rearrange one of the equations to get t
Substitute into the other equation so only two values remain

Q

How do you differentiate parametric equations?

A

since dy/dx = dy/dt x dt/dx
differentiate both equations and rearrange to get dy/dt and dt/dx
then mulitply

Q

How do you solve parametric equations with two uknowns?

A

Use the equations and the point given to find the value of one of the unknowns
use that to find another one of the knowns
solve to get an equation with only two unknowns
