Differentiation (Normal, from First Principle) Flashcards
Differentiate y = ax^b?
y = abx^(b-1)
What is differentiation?
The process that gives you a formula for the gradient function.
How do you find the gradient???
Substitute the co-ordinates into the differentiated formula
What is the normal?
A straight line perpendicular to the tangent where it touches the curve
What is the formula to Differentiate from the First Principle?
h–>o f(x+h)–f(x) / h
In Differentiation, what does x equal if the gradient is increasing?
x >= 0
In Differentiation, what does x equal if the gradient is decreasing?
x =< 0
What is the gradient at stationary points?
m=0
How do you find the stationary points?
- Differentiate
- Solve to =0
- Substitute
How do you know if a stationary point is a maximum or a minimum?
y -> dy/dx -> d2y/dx2 -> substitute
positive = minimum
negative = maximum
