Papilloedema Flashcards
What is the difference bewteen papilloedema nad swollen optic discs?
swollen optic discs means disc swelling secondary to any cause. papilloedema specifically refers to swollen optic disc secondary to raised ICP
What shoudl all patients with bilateral optic disc swelling be suspected of?
having raised ACP due to a SOL until proven otherwise
What is intracrainal pressure the sum of?
brain; blood and CSF
What is the Munro-Kellie hypothesis?
an increase in one varibale will result in a decrease of one/both of other variables since the sum must remain constant
What happens in riased ICP?
brain is squeezed through the foramen magnum, brainstem compressed, patient stops breathing and ides
What is important about cerebral blood flow?
brain require constant flow of blood over range of pressures- very inotlerant to hypo and hyperperfusion
What should you always check with papilloedema?
BP
What are hte possible mechanisms in idiopathic intracranial HT?
stenosis of transver cerebral sinuses; increased abdo pressure ( patients often obese)- obstructs CSF circulation
What happens is disc swelling becomes chronic?
disc swelling subsides but disc becomes atrophic and pale
