Paper chromatography Flashcards
What is paper chromatography?
Paper chromatography is a separation technique that is used to separate mixtures of soluble substances.
What are the two phases in chromatography?
Mobile phase and stationary phase?
What does mobile phase mean?
Mobile phase is a substance that moves through-the solvent.
What does mobile stationary mean?
A substance that does does not move-the paper.
How do you calculate the Rf value?
Rf=Distance travelled by spot/Distance travelled by solvent.
What can you use a chromatogram for?
You can use it to distinguish (the difference) between a pure substance and a mixture.
Identify substance using Rf value.
Describe the steps in paper chromatography.
Look at the revision workbook.
What doe soluble mean?
Soluble=can dissolve.
What does insoluble mean?
Insoluble=Can’t dissolve.
Why is the line on the paper always drawn with a pencil and not a pen.
The ink from the pen will dissolve with the other inks but the pencil won’t dissolve.
