Atoms Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest part of an element
that can exist.
Why are all atoms neutral?
All atoms are neutral, which means they have no overall electric charge.
This is because the number of protons (which are positively charged)
is the same as the number of electrons (which are negatively charged)
Describe the structure of an atom.
It has a nucleus in the middle which contains neutrons and protons. It has shells around it that has electrons circulating.
How do you work out the number of protons, neutron, electrons and mass.
protons=atomic number is the number of protons it has.
electron=number of protons equal to the number of electrons.
neutrons=the bigger number take away the smaller number.
mass=the top number is the mass number.
How do you work out the relative atomic mass?
Relative atomic mass (Ar) = (mass number of isotope 1) x (percent abundance of isotope) 1 + (mass number of isotopes 2) x (percent abundance of isotope 2)/100.
