Q

what is the central nervous system?

A
  • consists of brain and spinal cord
  • receives information from the senses and controls body responses

Q

what is the spinal cord?

A

a bundle of nerve fibres within spinal column, connects nearly all parts of the body with the brain

Q

what is the peripheral nervous system?

A
  • part of the NS outside of the brain and spinal cord
  • carries sensory and motor info to and from the CNS
  • connects CNS with rest of the body

Q

what is the somatic nervous system?

A
  • controls voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
  • carries sensory & motor information to and from CNS
  • part of peripheral nervous system

Q

what is the autonomic nervous system?

A
  • controls involuntary movement of non-skeletal muscles and internal body systems
  • part of peripheral nervous system

Q

what is the sympathetic nervous system?

A
  • produces arousal & energy, preparing body for rapid action (fight or flight)
  • part of the autonomic nervous system

Q

what is the parasympathetic nervous system?

A
  • reduces arousal, conserving energy and digestion, relaxes the body (rest & digest)
  • part of the autonomic nervous system

16
Q

what does the occipital lobe do?

A

processes visual information

17
Q

what does the temporal lobe do?

A

involved in hearing & language comprehension

18
Q

what is the brain stem?

A

responsible for regulating automatic functions essential for life (breathing, heart beats etc.)

19
Q

what is the cerebellum?

A

involved in controlling motor skills, balance & coordinating muscles

20
Q

what is the diencephalon?

A
  • contains thalamus - acts as relay station for nerve impulses coming from senses, involved in sleep and wakefulness
  • contains hypothalamus - regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, also acts as a link between endocrine and nervous systems
