Paper 1 - weathering and erosion Flashcards
weathering
break down of rocks where they are
erosion
rocks are broken down and carried away
mechanical weathering
breakdown of rock without changing its chemical composition e.g freeze thaw weathering
chemical weathering
break down of rock by changing its chemical composition
e.g carbonation weathing
when does mass movement happen? (falling of rocks down a slope)
when the force of gravity acting on the slopw is greater than the force supporting it
mass movement causes…
rapid retreat
more likely to happen when material is full of water and makes material heavier
three types of mass movement
slides - material shifts in a straight line
slumps - material shifts with a rotation
rockfalls - material breaks up and falls down slop
hydraulic power
wave crashes against rock and compresses the air in the cracks
this puts pressure on the rocks
repeated compression widens the cracks forcing more off
abrasion
eroded particles scrape and rub against rock, removing small pieces
attrition
eroded particles in the water smash into each other and break into smaller fragments
destructive waves
waves that carry out erosional processes
they have a high frequency and are high and steep
their backwash is more powerful than their swash meaning material is removed
swash
movement of water up a beacj
