Q

longshore drift

A

waves follow direction of prevailing wind and usually hit at an oblique angle.

the swash then carries material up the beach and the backwash carries the material down the beach at right angles

material zig-zags along the coast

Q

four processes of transportation

A

traction - large particles like boulders are pushed along sea bed by force of the water

saltation - pebble sized particles are bounced along the sea bed by force of the water

suspension - small particles like silt and clay are carried

soloution - soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried

Q

deposition

A

when material being carried by the seawater is dropped on the coast. occurs when water slows down so not fast enough to carry sediment

Q

how is amount of materiaal deposited on an area increased

A

when theres lots of erosion elsewhere on the coast, so lots of material available

lots of transportation of material into the area

Q

low energy waves

A

carry material to coast but they are not strong enough to take a lot of material away so there is very little erosion

these are called constructive waves

Q

constructive waves

A

have low frequency

theyre low and long

swash is powerful

backwash is weaker so material is deposited
