Paper 1 - coastal landforms caused by deposition Flashcards
where are beaches found
between the high water mark and the low water mark
formed by constructive waves depositing sand and shingle
sand beaches
flat and wide - backwash can move particles down the beach creating a gentle slope
shingle beaches
steep and narrow - weak backwash cant move them down the beach so shingle particles build up
spits
form at sharp bends in the coast line
longshore drift transports sand and shingle past the bend and deposits it in the sea
strong winds and waves can curve the end
the sheltered area behind the spit is protected from waves so lots of material accumulates so plants grow there and can become a mud flat or salt marsh
bars
formed when a spit joins two headlands togethor
the bar cuts off the bay so a lagoon forms
sand dunes
sand dunes are formed when sand deposited from longshore drift is moved up the beach by wind
obstacles cause wind speed to decrease so sand is deposited so the sand is then colonised by plants and grasses which stabilize the sand
the older dunes migrate inland as newer embryo ones are formed
