What is a phobia?
An irrational fear of an object or situation
What is meant by behavioural, emotional and cognitive characteristics of phobias?
Behavioural - ways in which people act, e.g. panic, avoidance, endurance.
Emotional - ways in which people feel, e.g. anxiety, unreasonable emotional response.
Cognitive - what people think, perceive or believe, e.g. irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions (e.g. seeing snakes as aliens, thinking belly buttons are ugly).
DSM recognises the following categories of phobia:
Specific phobia: phobia of an object (snakes) or situation (getting injections).
Social anxiety: phobia of a social situation such as public speaking.
Agoraphobia: phobia of being outside.
