Pancreas Flashcards
1
Q
Is the pancreas endocrine or exocrine?
A
It has both endocrine and exocrine parts.
2
Q
What structure controls the exocrine function of the pancreas?
A
Acinar cells
3
Q
Describe how the exocrine function works in pancreas cells.
A
- The acinar cells perform the exocrine function
- Secretes alkaline fluid (pancreatic juice) to the upper portion of the small intestine called the duodenum via pancreatic ducts
- The enzymes secreted are inactive precursors and only activated by enterokinase, an enzyme secreted by duodenal mucosa.
4
Q
Which hormone stimulates the acinar cells to release enzymes?
A
CCK (cholecystokinin)
5
Q
What enzymes do the acinar cells secrete?
A
- Trypsin
- Chymotrypsin
6
Q
What cells form the endocrine part of the pancreas?
A
The islets of Langerhans
7
Q
What supports the islets of Langerhans?
A
- Reticulin fibres and containing numerous fenestrated capillaries
- There is a capsule surrounding the Islets of Langerhans
8
Q
What do the Islets of Langerhans secrete?
A
- Alpha cells: Secrete glucagon
- Beta: Insulin
- Delta: Somatostatin
