PALS: SYSTEMATIC APPROACH Flashcards
Three characteristics of the initial impression
Level of conciousness
Breathing
Colour
Characteristics of Level of Conciousness
Unresponsive
Irritable
Alert
Characteristics of breathing
Abnormal breath sounds
Abnormal breathing patterns
Accessory Muslce use
Characteristics of Colour
Cyanosis

Mottling
This initial impression of consciousness, breathing, and color helps to answer the following question
“Is the child unresponsive with no breathing or only gasping?”
If there is no normal breathing, no pulse felt, what is the next step?
Initiate the pediatric cardiac arrest algorithm: begin CPR
If there is NO breathing, with a pulse , what is the next step?
Open the airway and provide ventilations and oxygen.
Attach to monitor, pulse Ox
After providing ventilations and oxygen, if the pulse is < 60/min with poor perfusion, what is the next step?
Initiate the Pediatric Cardiac Arrest Algorithm: begin CPR
If the child is responsive and no immediate
intervention needed, what is the next steps
Support A-B-Cs
Give oxygen
Monitor pulse and spO2
