What is allodynia
Pain experienced in response to a stimulus not normally painful
What is hyperalgesia
Heightened pain response from something that is painful
What is hyperpathia
Sensation of painful numbness
What is neuropathic pain
Pain arising as a direct consequence of a lesion or somatosensory system
Symptoms of neuropathic pain
Spontaneous, paroxysmal, burning, shooting, sharp, numb, allodynia, hyperalgesia, hyperpathia

McGill pain questionnaire
Pain tool used to assess pain in delirium, cognitive impairment or dementia
Bolton pain assessment tool
What is at the bottom of the analgesic pyramid
Simple analgesics such as NSAIDs and paracetemol

Weak opioids such as codeine, tramadol

Strong opioids such as morphine
What does paracetemol do
Analgesic and antipyretic, unknown mechanism of action
Dose of paracetemol given to adults
1g / 6 hours - but if <50kg then max 60mg/kg/day
Contraindications of paracetemol
Allergy, hepatic failure
Dose of paracetemol given to children
20mg/kg loading dose
10-15mg/kg up to max 90mg/kg/day

Ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen - COX-2s
