Prohibition
Women heavily involved. Women’s Christian Temperance Union and Anti-Saloon League. 1919; 18th amendment passed.
W.E.B. DuBois
African-American leader, founded Niagara Movement 1905. Fought job discrimination. 1908; lynching threatened in Springfield => Jane Addams and John Dewey founded the NAACP.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
Founded by Jane Addams, John Dewey, and W.E.B. DuBois in 1909. Racial equality through the courts. Still goes through today.
1920s
Rural to urban society. Boom times for farmers starting to end.
First successful flight.

Events up to Spanish-American War
1895; Cubans rebelled against Spanish rule. Opportunity for US expansionists.
Spanish-American War
1898, Spain sunk the Maine, getting the US involved. May 1, 1898 first battle. Rough Riders. 5000 people died mostly because of yellow fever.
Russo-Japanese War
Started 1904. US thought Japanese might invaded US territory in the Philippines. Roosevelt got them to sign the Treaty of Portsmouth in August 1905.
Panama Canal
Panama gained independence in 1903; Roosevelt acquired route for canal.
Monroe doctrine
Roosevelt strengthened it; only US could intervene in Latin America

June 28, 1914; Serbian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Engulfed by mid-August.
Alliances during WWI
Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire vs. Great Britain, France, Russia, US, and Belgium. Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway were neutral.
US in Great War
August 1914; US neutral, but supported Allies. Anti-German sentiment.
Lusitania
May 1915; German U-boat attacked with no warning.
