Negotiations started in July 1951.
When and where was an armistice eventually signed?
An armistice was eventually signed in July 1953 in Panmunjom. 2 years after negotiations started.
Why did it take so long for an armistice to be signed?
It was mainly due to Rhee obstructing the negotiations over ensuring continued American help for South Korea.
When was President Truman replaced by Eisenhower?
In November 1952 President Truman was replaced by Eisenhower who wanted to end the war as quickly as possible.
When did Stalin die and who replaced him?
Stalin died in March 1953 and the new leader of the USSR, Malenkov, was more friendly to the west.
What did the armistice agree?
- The 38th parallel would roughly mark out the divide between North and South.
- Either side of the 38th parallel would be a 2 mile demilitarised zone.
- All military forces would withdraw to their own territory.
- The repatriation of prisoners would begin.
Essentially things had returned to how they were before the war had started.
