στῆ δ᾽ ἄντα σχομένη: ὁ δὲ μερμήριξεν Ὀδυσσεύς,
ἢ γούνων λίσσοιτο λαβὼν ἐυώπιδα κούρην,
ἦ αὔτως ἐπέεσσιν ἀποσταδὰ μειλιχίοισι
λίσσοιτ᾽, εἰ δείξειε πόλιν καὶ εἵματα δοίη.
ὣς ἄρα οἱ φρονέοντι δοάσσατο κέρδιον εἶναι,
λίσσεσθαι ἐπέεσσιν ἀποσταδὰ μειλιχίοισι,
μή οἱ γοῦνα λαβόντι χολώσαιτο φρένα κούρη.
αὐτίκα μειλίχιον καὶ κερδαλέον φάτο μῦθον.
She stood and held her ground facing him; but Odysseus was considering in his mind whether he should beseech the beautiful-faced girl having taken hold of her knees, or whether he should beseech her just as he was, standing at a distance, with honeyed words, if perhaps she might show him the city and give him clothes. As he was thinking, it seemed to be better to beseech her standing at a distance with honeyed words, lest the girl grow angry with him in her heart if he took hold of her knees. Immediately, he spoke words both wily and honeyed.
