PAFP proceedings V: Tools in Family Assessment Flashcards
Steps in Family Systems Approach
- Recognize family structure (family genogram)
- Understand normal family fx (Smilkstein’s cycle of family fx)
- Learn to assess family structure & fx in clinical practice (Genogram, Family APGAR, FACES, FES, SCREEM, DRAFT, clinical bio & life events)
A family genogram must consist of a minimum of __ generations.
3
Each generation must be identified by ___ numerals
Roman
The family name must be placed ___ each major unit
above
Given names and ages are placed ___ each symbol
below
The index patient is identified with an ___
arrow
___ is indicated when the chart was developed so that ages would be adjusted over time
Date
Type of chart (family genogram) that gives dynamic image of the family indicating strength of bonds, weaknesses (marital separation) & ability to withstand future stressful situations (who are living in the same household)
Functional chart
5 Fx of a normal family
- provides support to each other
- establish autonomy and independence for each person in the system
- create rules that govern conduct of family and of individuals w/in the family
- adapt to change in envt (family life cycle)
- communicate w/ each other
Family w/ chronic inability to respond to the needs of the members or to cope w/ changes and stresses in the envt
Dysfunctional family
Excellent tool in learning family structure but with limited role in assessing family fx
Family genogram
Family assessment technique used in individuals/ small groups wherein significance/ influence of family members can be assessed
Draw a Circle Test
Rapid tool developed by Smilkstein and consists of 5 questions to assess family fx and level of satisfaction
Family APGAR
Capability of family to utilize and share inherent resources (intra/extra-familial)
Adaptation
Sharing of decision-making
Partnership
Refers to physical and emotional growth; measures satisfaction of the available freedom to change
Growth
Refers to how emotions are shared b/w members
Affection
Refers to how time, space and money are shared
Resolve
4 basic situations where Family APGAR is needed
- When the family will be directly involved in caring for the pt (e.g. Post-MI/CVA pts)
- When treating a new pt in order to get gen view of family fx
- When treating a patient whose family is in crisis (e.g. family tx for drug addicts)
- When a pt’s behavior makes you suspect a psychosocial problem possibly d/t a family dysfx
All family health care programs should have an initial ____ scoring.
Family APGAR
30-item tool with a 1-5 self-reported scale from Olson’s circumflex model of family fx
FACES (Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale)
90-item questionnaire developed by Moss to compare health care results w/ family variables
FES (Family Envt Scale)
Assessment involving resources of the family
SCREEM
Social Cultural Religious Economic Educational Medical
Simple tool developed by Drs. A. Pineda and R. Cruz involving a projective technique by drawing a family exhibiting evasiveness, adultered basic needs and psychopathology
DRAFT
Draw-a-Family-Test
Community-based Family Assessment
Components of the Family Assessment Model
- Family identification (composition, social hx, community)
2. Individual & family data (health hx, family dynamics, recording hierarchies)
