pack 12- reducing the risk of CVD Flashcards
what do antihypertensives do
reduce blood pressure
examples of antihypertensives
diuretics
calcium channel blockers
ACE inhibitors
what do ACE inhibitors do?
prevent angiotensin II hormone from being released, reducing vasoconstriction, lowering bp
what do calcium channel blockers do?
block calcium movement to smooth muscle.
muscle cannot contract
no vasoconstriction
what do diuretics do?
increase vol of urine
reduce blood plasma vol and cardiac output
lowering bp
common side effects of all antihypertensives
dizziness and abnormal heart rate
what do statins do?
reduce cholesterol levels
how do statins work?
they lower LDL cholesterol by inhibiting enzymes that its produce it in the liver, reducing LDL in the blood.
side effects of statins
nausea and headaches
what do anticoagulants do?
reduce risk of clotting
example of an anticoagulant
warfarin
what does warfarin do?
inhibit vitamin K production
stop blood clotting process
what do platelet inhibitors do?
prevent blood clotting
exmaple of platelet inhibitors
aspirin
how does aspirin work?
reduce stickiness of platelets reducing likelihood of clots
