p53 protein Flashcards
what role does p53 have?
it is a tumor supressor
What does p53 activate and for what?
activates other proteins to repair damaged DNA
what can p53 also activate?
apoptosis
what is apoptosis
programmed death of cells if damaged cannot be repaired
What is oncogene
a gene that can transform a cell into a tumor cell (in certain circumstances)
what does it mean to have a mutated p53 protein
it means the p53 protein is not functioning so when a error/tumor is detected, it wont make the undergo cell-suicide or be able to repair it so it allows tumor cell to keep dividing
1st mutation/loss? result?
what kind of gene is activated
1 out of the 2 p53 gene is not working
susceptible to cancer
Oncogene is activated
2nd mutation/loss?
what does it lead to
2 out of 2 p53 gene is not working so it will lead to cancer
What is the working p53 protein’s process? : aptosis
Bad shit is detected –> p53 attacks bad cell –> cell suicide
What is the working p53 protein’s process?: non aptosis
bad shit is detected –> cell cycle arrest –> DNA repair –> cell cycle restart
What is nonfunction p53 protein process?
bad shit is detected –> p53 isn’t functioning –. uncontrolled cell division due to cell cycle continuing
