p5 Flashcards
what’s the definition of a force?
A push or pull. That acts on an object, Due to its interaction with another object.
what’s a contact force?
Objects are physical touching
what’s a non-contact force?
don’t require the objects to be touching
an example of a contact force
Friction
what are the types of a non-contact force?
Gravitational
magnetic
electrostatic
What is a scalar quantity?
something that has a magnitude but no direction
what is a vector quantity?
something that has a magnitude and a direction
definition of extension–
Increase in length of a spring when it is stretched
what is newtons first law?
an object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force acts on it.
eg. moving object keeps moving.
what is newtons 2nd law?
1-If a non-zero resultant force occurs on the object, it will accelerate
2-The size of the resultant force is directly proportional to the acceleration it causes.
what is newtons third law?
when two objects interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite
