geography coasts: Flashcards
what are the 4 types of weathering?
chemical,
biological,
salt,
freeze-thaw.
what is the definition of erosion?
The removal of material and shaping of landforms by the action of waves
characteristics of constructive waves:
weak backwash
long wavelength
low wave frequency
strong swash
characteristics of destructive waves:
strong backwash
short wavelength
high wave frequency
weak swash
what is hydraulic action?
the constant force of destructive waves pounding on the base of cliffs.
what is corrasion?
when waves throwbacks at cliff faces, chipping bits off.
what is abrasion?
action of rocks in the sea water scraping over a surface.
like a ‘sandpaper’ effect
what is solution?
when rocks such as limestone are easily dissolved due to the acidity of the water.
what is attrition?
when rocks are being transported by waves, they collide together, which causes the rocks to be smoother and smaller.
what is traction?
when large pebbles ROLL along the seabed
what is saltation?
medium sized pebbles BOUNCE along the seabed
what is suspension?
particles are carried/float in the water
what is solution?
dissolved chemicals travel in the water
