P4.1 Flashcards
What does the closeness of the magnetic field lines represent
It represents the field strength
What direction does the magnets move
They move in the direction that makes the magnetic field lines shorten
How can you explain the movement of magnets
Using magnetic field lines
How does a steel paperclip get attracted to a magnet
It has become an induced magnet as the magnet has caused the domains of the paper clip to line up.
How does something become a permanent magnet
It becomes a permanent magnet when all the domains of the metal line up.
What is the difference between a hard magnetic material and a soft magnetic material
When you remove the magnetic material the hard magnetic material’s domains continue to be lined up whereas in soft magnetic materials the domains return to their original direction.
Why do compasses point north
compasses point north as they are attracted to the North pole
what does the strength of a field around a wire depend on
The magnitude of the current
The distance from the wire
The number of coils
How do solenoids enhance the magnetic effect
Many parallel loops make a coil or solenoid. Adding together many fields produces a much stronger field than that of a wire. You can make it even stronger by putting a magnetic material inside the core.
What is the symbol for current into a page and which direction are the arrows pointing
x and clockwise
What is the symbol for current out a page and which direction are the arrows pointing
. and anticlockwise
