P1.2 Flashcards
Density formula
Density = Mass/Volume
What is the Law of conservation of mass?
Mass can’t be created or destroyed
How does the particle model explain densities?
The particles are closer together in solids making solids have higher densities. In gases the particles are far apart so they have a low density.
What does temperature mean
Temperature is the average kinetic energy of the particles.
What can heating do?
Change the energy stored within a system.
Produce a change of state
Make chemical reactions happen
Difference between chemical and physical changes
In a chemical change a new substance is made whereas in a physical change no new substances are made.
What is specific heat capacity
The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a material by 1 degree celsius.
Formula of specific heat capacity
Energy transferred = mass x specific heat capacity x change in temperature
What does a high specific heat capacity mean
It takes short times to heat up
What is specific latent heat
The energy transferred to change 1KG of substance into a different state. (vaporisation) is to a gas from a liquid and (fusion) is from a solid to liquid.
Specific latent heat formula
Energy = mass x specific latent heat
