Where is Lagos located?
In the south east of Nigeria in Africa, facing the south Atlantic Sea
Why is Lagos important Nationally?
Generates 10% of Nigeria’s GDP
Lekki Free Zone is responsible for creating 2 million new jobs, where goods don’t have to be checked through thoroughly
How is Lagos important regionally?
-It has one of the most extensive road networks in Western Africa
-largest and busiest port in Africa, and services most of Western Africa
How is Lagos important globally?
It is the financial hub of Africa and has the highest GDP in Africa.
-capital of Africa’s film and music industry (Nollywood)
What is life like in Lagos?
-over 250 ethnic groups, Yoruba is the most dominant
-Victoria Island which is known for its luxury homes and shopping districts.
-large inequality of wealth- Makoko slums compared to Victoria island
-lots of festivals
Why are people migrating to Lagos? (push factors)
Around 1200 new migrants arrive in Lagos every day
-Boko Haram makes the north dangerous (Borno)
-climate change is worsening droughts in rural areas, farmers can’t produce crops
-mechanisation of farming, farmers no longer have jobs and can’t provide for families
Why are people migrating to Lagos?
Pull factors
-Better school and healthcare
- more secondary jobs, so higher wages
Impacts of migration to Lagos?
Poverty and slums: 66% live in slums
Crime: 246 murders and 51 kidnaps in 2016 because of difficulty of getting jobs
Pollution: air pollution is 25 times over safe limits from WHO
What is one initiative to make the city more sustainable?
Lagos State Integrated Waste Management Project:
Ikosi fruit market: took waste from stalls and converted into electricity, only lasted 3 years
used to provide lighting in evenings, generator could power 50 stalls, useful for getting more $$
Private companies: provides jobs, chatges households so won’t collect all waste, some disposed of in Lagoon
