P2 2b group 7 (halogens) chlorine bromine and iodine Flashcards
what are the elements in group 7?
fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine
why do they all have similar reactions?
they all have seven electrons in the outermost shell
what is special about halogens?
they are diatomic
what is the state and appearance of fluorine?
yellow gas
what is the state and appearance of chlorine?
pale yellow - green gas
what is the state and appearance of bromine?
red-brown liquid
what is the state and appearance of iodine?
purple - black solid
what are the characteristics of fluorine?
very reactive, poisonous gas
what are the characteristics of chlorine?
reactive, poisonous and dense gas
what are the characteristics of bromine?
dense red brown volatile liquid
what are the characteristics of iodine?
shimmery, crystalline, soils, sublimes to form a purple vapour
what is the colour of chlorine in a solution?
pale green
what is the colour of bromine in a solution?
orange
what is the colour of iodine in a solution?
dark brown
what happens to the boiling points of halogens?
they increase as they go down the group
why do the melting and boiling points increase as you go down group 7?
increasing intermolecular forces as the atoms become larger, so more energy is required to overcome these forces
what is the reactivity like in group 7?
the reactivity decreases as you go down the group
