LM 1d periodic table Flashcards
how are elements arranged in the periodic table?
in order of atomic number and in group and periods
why are the elements in the same group?
because they have the same number of electrons the the outermost shell, group 2 element have 2 electrons in the outermost shell
where are the transition metals?
the big chunk in the middle
why do the elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
- because they all have the same amount of electrons the the outer shell, but they still differ in reactivity because the outermost shell can be further or closer to the nucleus
why do noble gases not react?
because they have a full outer shell
what are some features of metals? not physical
always form positive ions
what is a feature of non metals?
form negative ions or don’t form them
why are elements more reactive when they have more shells?
because the outer shell is further from the nucleus which is holding all of the bonds, so if it is further than its easier to break the bonds and it will loose it more easily
metal physical properties?
- metallic bonds are strong
- malleable
- conductors of heat and electricity
- high melting and boiling points
non metal physical properties?
- dull
- brittle
- low melting and boiling points
- poor conductor
- lower density
what are transition metals?
- typical metal properties
- can form more than one ion
- good catalysts
