p1b2 Flashcards
3 objectives of first aid
maintain breathing, stop bleeding, prevent shock
11 basic wounds
fractures open and closed, sucking chest wound, abdominal evisceration, massive hemorrhage with amputation, laceration, electrical shock, smoke inhalation, burns, hypothermia, heat stress, puncture wound
fractures open and closed
dont put the fracture ‘in place’. apply pressure to both sides, ETD over wound, secure splint
sucking chest wound
wipe blood, seal wound, check and treat for exit wound
abdominal evisceration
dont apply pressure, cover intestine with ETD dressing, put patient on back with knees bnt and toes inward
massive hemorrhage with amputation
direct pressure, elevate, tourniquet, write time, retrieve body part and place on ice
laceration
ETD, pressure, and tourniquet if needed
electrical shock
secure power, move to safe place, assess entrance and exit wounds, treat with ETD
smoke inhalation
move outside, assess abc’s, oxygen
burns
determine degree and percentage
hypothermia
remove wet clothes, cover with clay blankets, head to toe assessment, treat for secondary injuries, shock
heat stress
move to cool area, remove excess clothing, drench with water, make sure casualty is in a place with good ventilation , complete head to toe assessment, treat for shock
puncture wound
identify penetrating object, stabilize object and bandage wound, complete head to toe assessment, treat for shock
1st degree burn
red skin, mild pain
2nd degree burn
red skin, blisters, severe pain
3rd degree burn
charred black skin, may or may not be painful
3 methods of controlling bleeding
- direct pressure
- pressure points
- tourniquet
basic treatment for a suicide gesture or attempt
assume the threat is real, dont leave patient alone, keep from inflicting harm, treat any self-inflicted wounds
symptoms for a joint dislocation
bruises/tears in the muscle, ligaments, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves
treatment for a joint dislocation
dont put joint back in unless medical officer can not be reached in 8 hours
when and why a cold pack would be used on a sprain
used for 24-48 hours to reduce swelling and control internal hemorrhage
when and why a heat pad would be used on a sprain
promotes healing and reduces swelling
