P15.5 The generator effect Flashcards
What does a generator contain?
Contains coils of wire that spin in a magnetic field
A potential difference is induced across the ends of the wire
What is electromagnetic induction?
When a wire/conductor cuts across through a magnetic filed line
Which induces a potential difference
What is the generator affect?
If the conductor is part of a complete circuit the induced pd makes an electric current pass through the circuit
Why does the ammeter pointer deflect when one end of a bar magnet is pushed into the coil?
Because of the movement of the bar magnet
The induced pd causes a current because the coil is part of a complete circuit
What happens if the wire is held stationary in the magnetic field?
No current is generated
What happens if the wire is moved faster across the magnetic field?
A bigger current is generated when the wire moves faster
What is the direction of an induced current?
It always opposes the orignal change that caused it
