P1.3 - The Universe Flashcards
What is a collection of stars called?
A galaxy
Put these objects in order of size (smallest to biggest) : Sun, Earth, Moon, Solar System, Galaxy
Moon, Earth, Sun, Galaxy, Solar System
Name one other type of electromagnetic radiation that scientists use to observe objects in space
Gamma
Explain why some telescopes are placed above the earth’s atmosphere
They are placed above cloud’s or the earth’s atmosphere because the atmosphere absorbs em waves
What is SETI?
The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence
Explain how Space Probes, Surface Lander’s and Surface rover’s differ and what they are each used for
Space probe, known as an orbiter, goes into orbit around a planet where it can then take photos from above. A surface rover has wheels and lands on a planet which it
What is the life cycle of Massive Stars?
Nebula, Protostar, Main Sequence, Red Supergiant, Supernova, Neutron Star, Black Hole
What is the life cycle of average stars?
Nebula, Protostar, Main Sequence, Red Giant, Shell of Gas, White Dwarf
How do the two stars differ?
Bigger stars have shorter lifespan. Fusion happens more rapidly and they both end up with different things.
Why does CMBR support the theory the universe started as a tiny point of energy then expanded rapidly?
Because CMBR is Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation which is left over energy from the Big Bang
What is Red Shift?
Where an object moves away from us, the wave length increases but the frequency of the wave decreases. The light appaears red because red has a long wave length.
What is the steady state theory?
That the universe is still expanding and it always existed. At this point in time matter is being created
What is the Big Bang theory?
Started 13.5 billion years ago, all matters started out as a tiny point of energy then the universe expanded from this point
What was the theories of the Geocentric model? (2)
The Earth was at the central of the Solar System
Everything orbits Earth
What were the two theories of the Heliocentric model? (2)
The sun is at the centre of the Universe
The planets orbit the sun
