Earthquakes Flashcards
1
Q
How do Earthquakes occur?
A
When the Continental and Oceanic plate collide.
The oceanic plate is denser so it sinks below it.
When this pressure is then released, an Earthquake occurs
2
Q
Why do the Continental and Oceanic plate collide?
A
Because of convection currents in the mantle. When the Oceanic plate then sinks below, it gets stuck which creates friction
3
Q
How can we detect Earthquakes?
A
Through Seismometres
4
Q
What are ‘Seismometres’?
A
They are instruments that measure the movement of the ground
5
Q
Are Earthquakes easy to predict?
A
No because the pressure is suddenly released.
