P13 Flashcards
What is the order of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Radio waves
Microwaves
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultraviolet waves
X- rays
Gamma rays
What happens to the wavelength as you go down the electromagnetic spectrum
They decrease
What happens to the frequency and energy as you go down the electromagnetic spectrum?
It increases
What is the only wave that the human eye can detect?
Visible light
What do electromagnetic waves do?
Transfer energy from a source to an absorber
What is the wave speed equation with units?
Wave speed(m/s) = frequency(hertz) X wavelength( m)
What does white light contain?
All the couloirs of the visible spectrum
What is infrared radiation used for?
Carrying signals from remote control handsets and inside optical fibres
What are microwaves used for?
Carrying satellite tv programmes and mobile phone calls
What are radio waves used for?
Radio and Tv broadcasting, radio communication and mobile phone calls
What is mobile phone radiation?
Microwave radiation and is also radio waves at near-microwave frequencies
What does the wavelength of waves effect?
How far they travel
How much they spread
How much information they carry
What are microwaves used for?
Satellite TV signals
What are carrier waves and how do they work?
Waves that are used to carry information, they do this by varying their amplitude
What are optical fibres?
Very thing transparent fibres that are used to transmit communication signals by light and infrared radiation
