P&P Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan & PPE Flashcards
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
______________ consists of Department approved Air-Purifying Respirators (APR’s), Infectious Control/Isolation equipment, suits, gloves, boots or any other equipment or accessories that are deemed necessary as part of the Respiratory Protection Program.
Air-Purifying Respirator (APR)
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
A device designed to protect the user by employing filters or sorbents to remove harmful substances from the air. Air-Purifying Respirators do not supply oxygen and must not be used in oxygen deficient atmospheres. Air-Purifying Respirators are designed to protect the wearer for short periods only and are not effective against highly caustic, toxic or radioactive materials, which are immediately dangerous to life or health. The approved APR mask equipped with filter, issued by the Sunrise Police Department, exemplifies this type of device.
Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH)
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Any condition that poses either an immediate threat to life or health or an immediate threat of severe exposure to contaminants, such as toxic or radioactive materials, which are likely to have adverse delayed effects on health. An oxygen deficient environment is life threatening as are materials listed in the U.S Department of Transportation’s Emergency Response Guidebook.
Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
A process in which a member wearing a Department issued APR is exposed to an irritant smoke, an odorous vapor or other suitable test agent. An air-purifying respirator must be equipped with an air purifying element(s) (filter) which effectively removes the test agent from inspired air. If the member is unable to detect penetration of the test agent into the respirator, they have achieved a satisfactory fit with the APR.
At-risk personnel
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Personnel who have a possibility of exposure because of their job assignments, which include but are not limited to: Police Officers, Public Service Aides (PSA’s), I.D Technicians (CSI), Property and Evidence Technicians.
Bodily Fluids
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Any fluids secreted by the body, including but not limited to blood, semen, saliva, urine, or feces.
Biohazardous Materials
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Organisms that include all infectious agents or biologically derived infectious materials that present either a risk or a potential risk to the health of humans or animals, either directly through infection or indirectly through damage to the environment. Materials may include certain types of genetically engineered DNA; organisms and viruses infectious to humans, animals or plants, e.g. parasites, viruses, bacteria, fungi; and biologically active agents, i.e. toxins, allergens, venoms that may cause disease in other living organisms or cause significant impact to the environment or community.
Biohazardous Waste Area
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
A designated area specifically used for decontamination of items and the storage of Biohazardous waste prior to disposal.
Decontamination
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
A physical or chemical means to remove, inactivate, or destroy blood borne pathogens on a surface or item to the point where it no longer is able to transmit infectious particles and the surface or item is rendered safe for handling, use, or disposal.
Significant Exposure
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Direct contact with bodily fluids on open cuts, breaks in the skin or mucous membranes such as the mouth or eyes.
Exposure Incident
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
A specific eye, mouth, mucous membrane, non-intact skin, or potential contact with blood or other infectious materials.
Non-Significant Exposure
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Close range spread/inhalation of contaminated respiratory droplets or intermediate carrier.
Sharps
Chap 29 Exposure Control Plan and PPE
Items that can puncture the skin such as glass, needles, knives, etc.
