Independence:
a situation in which the people of a country exercise self-government and sovereignty over their state territory having gained political freedom from outside control
Succession
The way things develop over time as a sequence of events.
State:
an area o fland, of an independent country, with well-defined boundaries within which there is a politically organised body of people under a single government
sovereignty:
the absolute authority that independent states exercise in the government of the land and peoples in their territory.
Characteristics of a state

the set of state institutions and organisations through which state power is exercised
self-determination
the right of a group with a distinctive territorial identity to freely determine its political status and freely pursue its economic, social and cultural development.

how it can recover from teh impacts of a hazard. their vulnerability affects their resilience.
it’s measured by the Fund for peace FFP fragile states index.
this is based on social, economic, political and military indices.
Nation
a large group of people with strong bonds of identity, united by shared descent, history, traditions, culture and language.
even though most states contain citizens of more than 1 nationality, most states consider themselves to be nation-states.
diaspora
the spread of an ethnic or national group from their homeland
a nation is not confined to one state. many states contain several nations.
sovereignty
the absolute authority that independent states exercise in the government of the land and peoples in their territory.
no one can intervene in a states domestic politics.
a state can’t proclaim sovereignty, it has to be mutually recognised
once recognised it can enter into international relationships with other states.
territorial integrity
the principle that the defined territory of a state over which it has exclusive and legitimate control, is inviolable.
preserving territorial integrity and sovereignty helps international security & stability.
Norms
are moral principles, customs and ways of living that are universally accepted as standard behaviour. they are developed over time and embedded in international law. (charter of the united nations)
governments should arrange their laws in line with the charter.
