Oxygenation & suctioning Flashcards
What is Atelectasis?
Collapse of a portion of the lung
What is tidal volume?
volume of air inspired & expired with each breath
What is pleural fluid?
fluid to prevent friction during breathing and to keep layers adherent through its surface tension
What is surfactant?
lipoprotein produced by specialized alveolar cells reduces surface tension of alveolar fluid
-> enhances lung expansion
what is apnea?
cessation of breathing
orthopnea
inability to breathe except in an upright/ standing position
what is orthopneic position
typical posture of client with respiratory difficulty
what is the tool for clients’ breathing training?
incentive spirometry
When do we use oro/ nasopharyngeal suctioning?
client able to cough be unable to clear secretions by expectorating/ swallowing
When do we use oro/nasotracheal suctioning?
client with pulmonary secretion is unable to cough
