AOM 3 Flashcards
What are electrolytes
Chemicals that carry an electrical charge;
conduct current for normal cell function nad allow transmission of elctrochemical impulses in muscle & nerve fibres
Ways of fluid output
Kidneys, skin (insensible & sensible loss), lungs, gastrointestinal
normal pH of arterial blood
7.35 - 7.45
What pH of arterial blood would lead to death?
below 6.8 (acidosis0 or above 7.8 (alkalosis)
3 ways of regulation of acid-base balance
Respiratory regulation (rapid response)
- increase CO2 -> increase resp. rate & depth
Renal regulation (slow response)
- increase H+ -> kidneys reabsorb & regenerate HCO3
Buffers
- carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer system (remove/ release H+)
Where do we check for edema?
dorsum of the foot, around the ankles, over tibia, sacral area
