Oxygen Therapy And Equipment Flashcards
What is the rules in determining required oxygen?
Sufficient oxygen to supply a patient,
at a flow rate of 15 LPM,
from the time of initial application to the arrival at the medical aid
PLUS another 15 minutes
Three most common sized oxygen cylinders are:
D 14.5 ft.³ (39 minutes at 10LPM)
E 26 ft.³ (63 minutes at 10LPM)
K 244 ft.³ (10 Hrs, 23 minutes at 10LPM)
Oxygen facemasks three types
Simple
Partial rebreathing
Non-rebreathing
Oxygen facemask delivery rates (3)
Simple 50% at 10 L flow
Partial rebreather 60% at 10 L flow
Non-rebreather 100%
Indications for the use of oxygen
RTC
All respiratory distress
Respiratory illness
Shortness of breath
Inadequate respiration
All cardio distress
Cardiac arrest
Cardiovascular illness
Shock
Decreased LOC
Pregnant
Air Evac
Decompression illness
Inadequate oxygenation a.k.a.
Hypoxia
Signs and symptoms of hypoxia
Confused
Restless
Excessively drowsy
Use caution in the administration of oxygen to which type of disease
Advanced COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
* watch for signs of impending carbon dioxide narcosis,
slowing of the respiratory rate, sleepiness, confusion, and decreased LOC
