Oxygen Administration Flashcards
Therapeutic Effects
To provide supplemental oxygen therapy to diminish respiratory distress and tissue/ organ hypoxia
Indications 1
To meet the increased oxygen demands for any injured or ill patients
Indications 2
Any situation or condition in which hypoxia or hypoxemia is suspected
Contraindications
None, if the patient is showing signs of hypoxia
Side Effects 1
May result in respiratory depression or arrest in patients breathing on “Hypoxia Drive”
Side Effects 2
Oxygen toxicity may result after several days of > 50% oxygen concentration delivery.
Safety Precautions 1
Cylinders that are positioned upright MUST BE secured to prevent tipping or falling over
Safety Precautions 1
Do not seal the valve stem w/ tape or petroleum based substances, it can contaminate the O2
Safety Precautions 1
Do not allow smoking in the vicinity when O2 is in use
Safety Precautions 1
Do not use regulators with missing or modified pins
Safety Precautions 1
Keep all valves closed when not in use even when tank is empty
Safety Precautions 1
Keep oxygen cylinders horizontal and secured from rolling.
Procedure 1
Standard Precautions
Procedure 2
Visually inspect bottle and regulator, pins, o-ring hydro date, damage
Procedure 3
Quickly open valve stem to remove any dirt or debris
Procedure 4
Secure the regulator to the bottle open valve and check for leaks
Procedure 5
Verify adequate tank pressure
Procedure 6
Apply a nasal canula; flow rate 1-6 lpm : 24%- 44% O2 concentration
Procedure 7
Apply a non rebreather: flow rate 10-15 lpm: max 90% O2
Procedure 8
Attache a Bag Valve Mask: flow rate 15-25 lpm: 97%-100%
