Therapeutic Effects
To remove mucus, vomitus secretions, blood and sputum from hypo pharynx
Indications
Any Patients airway or breathing is comprimised by fluid
Contraindications
None

Injury oropharyngeal tissue, soft tissue, mucosal dental damage

Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Test / set the unit to confirm vacuum reading is >300 mm/hg
Procedure 3
Select and measure the appropriatly sized suction catheter- measure from the corner of the mouth to the earlobe, ridged tip or tonsil tip Yankauer, or Soft tip “french catheter”
Procedure 4
Open the patients mouth with the cross finger techique
Procedure 5
Insert the suction catheter to the approriate depth in the pharynx and then cover the hole to create suction
Procedure 6
Suction the pharynx and hypopharengeal area from side to side as you withdraw the catheter
Procedure 7
Suction No longer than:
Adults - 15 sec
Children - 10 sec
Infants - 5 seconds
Procedure 8
Re-oxygenate the patient for at least 30 second and reassess the need for additional suctioning.
