BVM Flashcards
Therapeutic Effects
Manually operated ventilation device that achieves approx 100% oxygenation
Indications 1
Any patient that require ventilation assistance affecting rate or depth
Indications 2
Patients with pulmonary edema ( rales crackles)
Contraindications
None
Side Effects 1
Can result in gastric distention, especially in children
Side Effects 2
Inconsistent and inadequate tidal volume
Side Effects 3
Insufficient face seal can result in poor ventilation or oxygenation
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
If the patient is unresponsive, open the airway with the appropriate technique (head tilt, Jaw thrust)
Procedure 3
Check the airway for foreign bodys / fluid, insert an airway adjunct when possible
Procedure 4

Procedure 7
Compress the bag smoothly, delivering adequate volumn over a 1 second period at a rate of :
Adult 10-12 b/m - 1 every 5-6 sec
Children 12-20 b/m -1 every 2-3 sec
Procedure 8
CONNECT BVM to an oxygen source if not already done and set the proper flow rate (15-25 lpm)
