Therapeutic Effects
Improves airway patency
Indications
Any unconscious patient or semiconscious patients with an intact gag reflect or clenched teeth trismus
Contraindications
Basilar skull fracture, periorbital and nasal fractures, suspected head trauma
Side Effects 1
Obstructions of the airway (usually from improper sizing)
Side Effects 2
Localized Soft tissue mucosal damage bleeding
Side Effects 3
Intracranial insertion following head trauma
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Maintain manuall C-spine immobilization throughout the procedure if C-Spine injury is suspected
Procedure 3
Determine the patients larger nare ( usually the right)
Procedure 4
Select and measure the appropriately sized Nasalpharangeal Airway- measure from the tip of the nose to the earlobe or angle of the jaw
Procedure 5
Lubricate with water soluble gel
Procedure 6
For the right nare insert bevel towards the septum
For the left nare, insert bevel towards the septum and gently rotate 180 during insertion
Procedure 7
If resistance is met during insertion, rotate gently from side to side. If the NPA still will not advance, attempt the other side
Procedure 8
Continue to insert until the flange rest against the nostril
Procedure 9
Assess airway patency ( ventilate as needed) look for adequate chest rise, lung sounds and pulse oximetry
