oxygen Flashcards
oxygen is needed to
release energy from glucose and to produce ATP in the liver
the two sources of oxygen are
hemoglobin and myoglobin
hemoglobin carries
oxygen from the lungs to muscle on hemoglobin in red blood cells
myoglobin is responsible for
storing some oxygen
oxygen in myoglobin is used up quickly during
strenuous activity
during strenuous activity
circulation may not deliver oxygen fast enough to permit the completion of aerobic cell respiration
in oxygen debt even though the
respiratory rate increases there is still not enough oxygen provided to the muscle fibers which means the muscle fibers run out of oxygen causing oxygen debt
when in oxygen debt the oxygen cannot be
completely broken down in carbon dioxide and H2O
during oxygen uptake
there is faster and deeper RR
(recovery oxygen uptake) after strenuous activity the RR and HR
remain high and only gradually return to normal over time
both hemoglobin and myoglobin contain the mineral
iron
iron enables hemoglobin and myoglobin to
bind to oxygen
iron also gives hemoglobin and myoglobin
their red color
