Oxidation and Reduction Flashcards
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons by a reactant in any reaction.
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons from a reactant in any reaction.
What is a redox reaction?
When reduction and oxidation occur at the same time.
What is an oxidising agent?
A substance that accepts electrons.
What is a reducing agent?
A substance that donates electrons.
Why do elements with low electronegativities act as reducing agents?
As they form ions by losing electrons.
When do elements with high electronegativities act as oxidising agents?
When they form ions by gaining electrons.
Where are the strongest reducing agents found on the periodic table?
In Group 1.
Where on the periodic table are the strongest oxidising agents found?
In Group 7.
