ovum features- lqc 2a Flashcards
1
Q
importance of the ovum being large
A
Many sperm able to fit round it, so increased chance of fertilisation. Contains more lipid droplets, so more energy for developing embryo.
2
Q
importance of zone pellucida in the ovum
A
Hardens when one sperm has entered to prevent polyspermy
3
Q
importance of the cortical granules (lysosomes) in ovum
A
Release enzymes which cause the zona pellucida to harden to prevent polyspermy (more than one sperm entering the ovum )
4
Q
importance of the Cytoplasm with proteins + lipid droplets in ovum
A
Food source to supply energy for cell division of the fertilised ovum, until implantation
