Q

cytokinesis

A

(division of cytoplasm)
In animal cells, a ring of protein filaments on the inside of the cell surface membrane contract and constrict to divide the cell. Plants cells synthesise a new cell plate down the middle of the cell.

Q

what is mitosis

A
  • Nuclear division (division of the nucleus), where two genetically identical daughter diploid nuclei are produced from one parent diploid nucleus.
  • A stage in the cell cycle

Q

what is the role of mitosis

A
  • To produce 2 new cells which are genetically identical to the parent cell - each with the
    diploid number of chromosomes
  • To increase cell numbers for growth
  • To replace damaged or dead cells to repair damaged tissue
  • Asexual reproduction (in some organisms – read the question)

Q

How can you use PMAT to remember what happens in the different stages of mitosis?

A

P – prophase – prepare
M – metaphase – middle
A – anaphase – apart
T – telophase – two (nuclei, not cells!) or terminate (end)
