mitosis- lqc 5 Flashcards
prophase
Chromosomes condense (become shorter and thicker)
Centrioles move to opposite poles (ends) of the cell
The spindle forms, ready for the chromosomes to attach to
The nucleolus and the nuclear envelope break down
metaphase
The chromosomes (each with two sister chromatids) attach to the spindle fibres by their centromeres and line up along the equator (middle) of the cell.
anaphase
Centromeres split, separating the two sister chromatids. Spindle fibres contract and shorten , pulling the two chromatids to opposite poles of the cell.
telophase
Chromosomes decondense (become long and thin again) A nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes – so the cell has two nuclei at the end of telophase. Two nucleoli reform (one in each nucleus) The spindle fibres break down
