1
Q
stem cell
A
An undifferentiated (unspecialised) cell that can give rise to other specialised cell types. No limit to division . Can be totipotent, pluripotent or multipotent.
2
Q
totipotency
A
When an undifferentiated stem cell can give rise to all specialised cell types (216 in the human body). No limit to division. All genes switched on.
3
Q
pluripotency
A
When an undifferentiated stem cell can give rise to most specialised cell types except totipotent embryonic stem cells. No limit to division. Some genes switched off.
4
Q
multipotency stem cell
A
An undifferentiated cell which can give rise to only specialised cell types of a closely related family. Many genes switched off.
