Ovine Respiratory Diseases Flashcards
What does Mannheimia Hemolytica cause?
Acute fibrinous pneumonia
What are the signs of M.Hemolytica?
fever, depression, anorexia, nasal/ocular discharge, dyspnea, coughing, may initially see sudden death
How do we treat/prevent M.hemolytica?
abx, minimize stress, no vx
What are the 2 most common viral respiratory disease in sheep?
Parainfluenza (PI3) & Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
What are the clinical signs of viral pneumonia?
coughing, nasal/ocular discharge, increased RR
How do we prevent viral pneumonia?
decrease stress, management practices, abx for secondary bacterial infection, NSAIDs if needed, nursing care, no vx
What is mycoplasma pneumonia?
aka “enzootic pneumonia”, stress and viral infection are predisposing factors
What are the signs of mycoplasma pneumonia?
chronic cough, mucopurulent nasal discharge, fever and depression if mannheimia becomes involved, decreased productivity
How do we prevent mycoplasma pneumonia?
decrease stress & crowding, no vx
What is OPP?
Ovine progressive pneumonia, aka Maedi-visna pneumonia
What are the characteristics of OPP?
chronic, progressive, long incubation of 2-4 yrs (usually seen in older ewes)
What are the signs of OPP?
wasting, increasing resp distress
What are the other conditions associated with OPP?
arthritis, mastitis, encephalitis (head tilt), spinal form (Unilateral pelvic limb proprioceptive deficits progressing to paresis & eventually complete paralysis
)
What is found on a post mortem with OPP?
large and heavy lungs that don’t collapse after removing them
How do we prevent/control OPP?
no vx, blood test & cull all animals affected, do not allow lambs to nurse ewes who have the virus
