Overview Of The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Function of the cardiovascular system
Transport of O2 and CO2, nutrients, metabolites, hormones, heat
Which organs etc are in series
Blood goes through:
Hypothalamus then anterior pituitary gland
Gut then liver
What does most vascular beds being in parallel mean
All tissues get oxygenated blood
Allows regional redirection of blood
Which organs get most blood
Abdominal organs - 24%
Kidneys - 20%
Skeletal muscle - 20%
Which organs use most oxygen
Abdominal organs - 30%
Skeletal muscle - 20%
Brain - 18%
Venous blood flow through the different size of vessels
Capillaries then venules then veins
System of flow for arterial blood (sizes of vessels)
Aorta then arteries then arterioles then capillaries
Properties of the aorta
Elastic with a wide lumen
Properties of arteries
Muscular with a wide lumen and non elastic wall
Properties of arterioles
Narrow lumen with thick contractile wall. Control resistance and flow, allowing regional redirection of blood
Properties of capillaries
Narrow lumens and thin walls
Properties of capacitance vessels (venules and veins)
Wide lumens, distensible walls, reservoir of blood. Low resistance and allows fractional distribution of blood
What holds the tricuspid (right) and the mitral (left) valves from inverting
Chordae tendonae attached to the papillary muscles
