Overview of Organ System Metabolism Flashcards
Propose consequences of the brain being a highly aerobic organ
brain would be first organ to go with lack of oxygen
Describe the anaerobic and aerobic metabolism of skeletal muscle
anaerobic: glucose from gluconeogenesis in liver
aerobic: acetyl CoA from ketone bodies & fatty acids vis B-oxidation; glucose from glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis
Describe the shuttling of lactate, alanine, glutamine and glucose between skeletal muscle and liver during fasting and exercise
- Cori Cycle - glucose goes to skeletal muscle for glycolysis and formation of lactate relieves the system of NADH+H+…lactate travels to liver to help with gluconeogenesis and relieves the cells of NAD
- alanine and glutamine are made in skeletal muscle in alanine cycle and sent to the liver for excretion as urea
Describe the shuttling of ketone bodies from liver to skeletal muscle during times of fasting or exercise
?
Analyze the evidence for cardiac muscle dependence on aerobic metabolism
1/2 the cytosol is taken up by mitochondria
Compare and contrast the function of white versus brown adipose tissues
White: store TAGs, helps produce chemical energy
Brown: produces heat energy
Describe the dependence of muscle and brain metabolism on creatine
pH buffer for all the lactate being produced (lowered pH)
biosynthesis and dietary uptake of creatine contribute, as well as phosphocreatine which uses creatine kinase and ADP to make creatinine and ATP
Identify the importance of dietary molecules delivery from intestines to liver
liver needs things first – hepatic portal vein
Interrelate the catabolic and anabolic roles of liver for the body
know what the liver does
