Overhead Reach Analysis Flashcards
Problems in overhead reach video
Increased elevation of shoulder girdle
Reduced elbow flexion
Increased lumbar side flexion - compensatory movement due to reduced thoracic mobility
Increased shoulder abduction
Altered scapula rhythm
Why are these problems occurring in overhead reach
Reduced ROM / tight scapular muscles - pec minor, levator scapulae, lat Dorsi contributes to increased scapular internal rotation
They have reduced flexion and reduced internal rotation in GHJ,- they compensate for this by increased shoulder abduction
REDUCED THORACIC SPINE MOBILITY - REDUCED SCAPULA MOVEMENT They have reduced extension in thoracic spine which they compensate for with increased lumbar side flexion,
> > Altered scapula rhythm due to reduced thoracic mobility and this may be due to serratus anterior muscle insufficieny «
Reduced strength in shoulder muscles that cause wrong movements > serratus anterior
Exercise to increase ROM
Stretching and mobilisation
Wall slides
What is the outcome measure for wall slides
Measure ROM at joint and use goniometer
What training can be done to increase strength in their shoulder muscles such as the serratus anterior and trapezius
And why?
Increase muscle strength through strength training and muscle control through neuromuscular coordination for force couple enhancement between scapula and GHJ
Both will result in advanced control during sports movements and reduce the demands placed on pecs which have made them come tight - muscular imbalamces
What exercise can be used to increase strength in the serratus anterior to increase the thoracic mobility and help extend it
Towel wall slides, from a neutral position to maximal scapular plane abduction and scapular protraction
What outcome measure can be used for towel wall slide exercise
Test the strength of the serratus anterior and retest
Examiner resists maximal effort scapular plane abduction and upward rotation of scapular
